Biography

Dirk Schröder was born in Cologne, Germany, in 1974. He studied electrical engineering and information technology at RWTH Aachen University, Germany, and received a degree of Dipl.-Ing. (M.Sc.) in 2004. He worked at the Institute of Technical Acoustics, RWTH Aachen University, as a research assistant under the supervision of Michael Vorländer and successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis “Physically based real-time auralization of interactive virtual environments” in 2011 with highest distinction. Subsequently, he received a one-year ERCIM (European Research Consortium for Informatics and Mathematics) scholarship and worked at the Centre of Quantifiable Quality of Service in Communication Systems, Centre of Excellence, at NTNU Trondheim, Norway. Here, Dirk worked together with Peter Svensson on the modeling of the wave phenomenon of diffraction with methods of Geometrical Acoustics. Apart from this, he started a collaboration with Jordi Puig in the art project A-me (Augmented Memories), where Dirk is responsible for immersive sound design and real-time auralization.

Dirk is member of the Audio Engineering Society (AES) and the German Acoustical Association (DEGA).

openMat

The simulation of sound propagation in room- and city-acoustics is carried out by many researchers, acoustic consultants and others all around the world. Different software tools have been designed for specific simulation demands but usually rely on the same basic material characterizations. Unfortunately, there is no standard for the storage of such data yet. Many file formats exist that are practically nonexchangeable and, thus, hinder the data sharing with others. To overcome this deficiency, the open database project openMat was founded. openMat proposes an open XML database format that supports a comprehensive characterization of both materials and objects, and that was discussed with many partners from the industry and research facilities during the first development stage. openMat supports not only standardized acoustical properties, e.g., absorption and scattering coefficients but also meta information on the respective materials such as multilingual descriptions and data acquisition details as well as the link-up of arbitrary files such as textures and 3D models to make the database applicable already during the graphical design stage. For ease-of-use, an open-source and platform-independent database editor with a convenient graphical user interface is available online at www.openmat.info.

openMeasurements

The initiative openMeasurements is aimed to be an Internet platform for free high-quality acoustic measurement data of any kind that could be helpful for researches, developers, and application users. The platform provides not only the measurements themselves, but also detailed information on how measurements were carried out, additional data such as CAD-models and their respective material data, and useful tools for simulation, analysis and modelling purpose.
